About St. Bernadette

St. Bernadette parish is located in the vicinity of Lake Pomme de Terre in Hickory County. Being the only Catholic church in Hickory County, it fulfills the need of area residents and the many visitors to the lake.

The first documented Mass in the area was celebrated in the Dame Site Park in November 1973. Because of the growing need for pastoral care for lake area residents and visitors, the first church building was constructed by members of the parish in 1976.

It was dedicated as St. Bernadette Church on May 16, 1976, by Bishop McAullife. The building was expanded in 1984 through the generosity of a parishioner. In 1998-99, under the guidance of Fr. Donald Powers, another addition was completed and dedicated on December 12, 1999, by Bishop John R. Gaydos.

Parish History was taken from Proclaiming the Good News in the Heart of Missouri written by Loretta Pastva, SND.
