Two Jefferson City Parishes to hold Advent Sunday Vespers

Cathedral of St Joseph and St. Peter parishes in Jefferson City will hold Advent Vespers services at 6 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, in their churches.
“Evening Prayer (Vespers) is one of several times during the day when the Church gathers to sanctify the day by meditating on Scripture, especially the Psalms,” organizers at St. Peter parish stated. “The practice began in the Old Testament when the Psalms would be chanted in the Temple and in local synagogues. Indeed, Christ Himself would have prayed this way during His earthly ministry.”
Participants pray Psalms, listen to a reading from the New Testament, offer intercessory prayer and join Mary in her own prayer by proclaiming the “Magnificat.”
“Advent Sunday Evening Prayer provides an opportunity for us to give the Lord the extra gift of our time and attention and give ourselves the gift of a peaceful meditation on the Scripture in preparation for His coming at Christmas,” organizers stated.
