“One Faith. One Family.” will be the theme for this year’s multicultural Mass and reception in the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City.
Bishop John R. Gaydos will offer the Mass at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19.
Families from all over the diocese are encouraged to help make the Mass and festivities a truly universal celebration of cultural richness and unity in faith.
“We want to gather all of the people of God from all cultures and ethnic groups in the diocese to celebrate who we are,” said Bishop Gaydos.
Cultural groups from across the diocese and the world will partake of a multiethnic, multi-language Liturgy.
Priests of the diocese, along with many international priests who are serving here, will concelebrate the Mass.
Choirs representing various Hispanic, Hawaiian, African, Filipino and Anglo liturgical traditions will lead and accompany the singing.
The readings and Prayers of the Faithful will be proclaimed in many different languages but will be printed in English in the program for the Mass.
People in traditional ethnic dress will serve in several key liturgical roles.
After Mass, a pot-luck banquet featuring food, music and dance of various cultures will be held in the Cathedral Undercroft.
All who attend are asked to bring a covered dish reflecting their culinary heritage, to share with 12 to 15 people.
This will be the diocese’s fifth annual multicultural Mass and reception.
All are welcome and encouraged to invite family and friends to this impressive celebration of Catholic identity and unity.
“We are united as one as the Body of Christ in the Church,” said Bishop Gaydos. “As a community, we can be a sign of the presence of Christ to all who encounter us. There is no more powerful way that we express this reality than when we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Supper together.”
Children are especially welcome and are likely to be amazed by what they see, hear and taste.
The celebration will end at around 6:30 p.m.
To help with planning, people wishing to attend are asked to notify the diocese ahead of time.
