College of Consultors to meet, select temporary administrator
The Most Reverend Shawn McKnight has been installed as Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas. Read about the installation in The Catholic Missourian.
Now, a temporary administrator must be chosen to lead the Diocese of Jefferson City until we have a new bishop. The duty of selecting an administrator falls to the diocesan College of Consultors. The consultors plan to meet today in Jefferson City to determine who will serve as administrator.
The College of Consultors is comprised of:
- Very Reverend Brad T. Berhorst
- Very Reverend Christopher L. Cordes
- Reverend Monsignor David D. Cox
- Very Reverend Jason T. Doke
- Reverend Monsignor Gregory L. Higley
- Reverend Monsignor Robert A. Kurwicki
- Very Reverend P. Gregory Oligschlaeger
- Very Reverend R. William Peckman
An announcement will be posted on the diocesan website soon after the administrator has been elected.
About the administrator
The diocesan administrator will serve as the leader of the diocese until a new Bishop of Jefferson City is appointed by the Holy Father and takes canonical possession of the diocese. The diocesan administrator can fully govern the diocese and make all necessary decisions to safeguard it while awaiting the appointment of a new bishop.
He is, however, bound by the principle: sede vacante, nihil innovetur, “When the see is vacant, nothing is to be altered.” This means that he will be obligated to carry out all existing diocesan laws and policies, which he will not be empowered to change.
When will we have a new bishop?
There is no official timeline for the selection of a new bishop. Once Pope Leo XIV has appointed a new bishop to lead the Diocese of Jefferson City, and he has accepted, the announcement will be published in the daily Vatican Bulletin. This could happen at any time. However, in recent similar situations, it has taken several months for a new bishop to be named.
What happens to the policies implemented under our former bishop?
The departure of a bishop does not nullify his policies. Clergy, religious, staff, and the faithful are expected to continue to work to fulfill the requirements that have been put in place in the diocese.
Continuing this week
Temporary Chancery office closure
The Chancery office continues to be closed due to work on the building's heating and cooling system.
Currently, we expect sections of the building to reopen over a two- to four-week period.
Chancery staff will be working remotely during this time.
Please continue to contact staff members for assistance as you would normally. The main Chancery phone line (573-635-9127) will remain operational, though you will have the opportunity to dial staff extensions directly prior to speaking with the receptionist. We encourage you to do so.
For your convenience, we are providing this one-page list of contact information for staff members who typically work in the Chancery office to ensure you can reach the person you need to contact.

Thank you for your patience during this time!

Save the Date - July Parish Secretaries' Workshop
Due to ongoing renovations at the Chancery building, the next quarterly Parish Secretaries' workshop will be held in July instead of June this year. This workshop will be hosted in-person, as well as via Zoom on July 23, 2025 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Pastors/Administrators are welcome and encouraged to attend.
We are allocating more time for this workshop to provide in-depth presentations on topics relating to your role as Parish Secretary. Many topics have been covered over the last few years, but we want to know:
- What topics would be most helpful to you?
- What topics should we revisit, or go into more detail?
- What questions do you have?
This is a great opportunity for networking with other parish staff from around the diocese! Please let us know your topic requests and questions by emailing Bernadette Adams at badams@diojeffcity.org.
