2024 Catholic Stewardship Renewal
New resources including a flyer and Spanish translations are now available. See below!
The theme for the 2024 Catholic Stewardship Renewal is:
“Without cost you have received, without cost you are to give.” Matthew 10:8b.
This verse comes from the Commissioning of the Twelve in Matthew 10:5-15. Jesus sends his disciples out to find and help the lost sheep, proclaiming ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ They are to “cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons.”
And why are they being called to do this? Because we were created in the image of God and are all called to be his hands and feet to love and serve the Lord using the gifts he has given us. Jesus sends his disciples to teach the way to salvation. Without cost we have received God’s love and grace. Therefore, we are also called to give to others without cost.
As we enter this season of Catholic Stewardship Renewal, may we each seek the Lord and discern how we can pray more, actively participate in the life of our parish families and the universal Church, and sacrificially give our first fruits to support the work of the Gospel. Commitment weekend for our diocesan Catholic Stewardship Renewal is October 19-20, 2024. Please visit the diojeffcity.org/stewardship to learn more or contact Patricia Lutz, director of stewardship at plutz@diojeffcity.org.
Podcast episode: Understanding Amendment 3
On Nov. 5, Missourians will vote on Amendment 3, which would legalize abortion in our state. In the latest episode of the Podcast from the Diocese of Jefferson City, we explore what’s contained in Amendment 3 and what it would mean for women and unborn children in Missouri. Thanks to Jamie Morris and Kathleen Lavery of the Missouri Catholic Conference for speaking with us for this episode.
Click here to listen to the new episode.
Missouri Catholic Conference Statement on Amendment 3
The Missouri Catholic Conference (mocatholic.org), the public policy agency of the state’s four Roman Catholic dioceses, issued the following statement Aug. 13:
Amendment 3, which will appear on Missouri’s November 2024 ballot, is an extreme constitutional amendment that legalizes abortion at any stage of pregnancy with no protections for the preborn child, even when the child is capable of feeling pain. The amendment would effectively repeal long-standing health and safety standards for women. These include basic health and safety requirements for clinics where abortions are performed, requiring a physician to perform abortions, informed consent requirements, laws prohibiting public funding of abortion, and parental consent requirements before a minor’s abortion.
The Missouri Catholic Conference will be working to inform the public about this deceptively worded amendment. We urge all Missourians of good will to stand for the health and safety of women and their preborn children and oppose Amendment 3.
An update about Mass counts
The Presbyteral Council discussed renewing the use of an annual October count at their last meeting. As you know, the Mass attendance statistics have proven to be very instrumental in making decisions for the pastoral care of our Diocese.
After discussion of the pros and cons of both the former October counts and the year-round counts of the last 2 years a decision was made to not reinstate an annual one-month count this October but to wait 3 years and then ask parishes to record and submit Mass attendance over an entire year. The Council members felt having a year’s worth of data was much more representative of the actual statistics for each parish and gave a clearer picture of the health of the parishes throughout the Diocese.
The next period for submission of weekend Mass attendance will be August 1, 2027 and continue through July 31, 2028.
Missouri Department of Agriculture offers guidance on the donation and sale of meat products
The Diocese of Jefferson City was asked to share the following letter from the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Meat and Poultry Inspection Program, with our parishes.
To Event Organizers,
The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Meat and Poultry Inspection Program (MDA MPIP) has the benefit of working closely with communities and consumers throughout the state. Locally sourced meat products are a great way to promote agriculture and serve our communities. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you some basic guidelines regarding the donation and sale of meat products.
Meat products in the State of Missouri are produced in one of three types of facilities.
- Custom exempt establishments, which slaughter and process animals for producers to take home to be consumed by family and non-paying guests.
- State-inspected establishments, which have the ability to slaughter and process meat that can be sold or donated only within the State of Missouri.
- Federally inspected establishments (USDA), which have the ability to slaughter and process meat that can be sold both nationally and internationally.
It is common for communities to gather for fundraiser suppers, breakfasts, or auctions. Many times, meat is sold at these community events, or a free will donation is requested. Meat intended to be offered for sale or donation must be slaughtered at a state or federally inspected establishment. This would include meat for fundraisers, fairs, picnics, and other situations where the meat would be sold or consumed for money (including auctions and donations).
If an animal is slaughtered by an individual or at an establishment that does not operate with the benefit of inspection (State or USDA inspection) the meat is not eligible to be sold or donated. Packages produced at either a state or federally inspected establishment will include an inspection seal on the label or a stamp on the carcass. This seal or stamp allows that product to be sold and/or donated, because it shows that the product was produced under a food safety system.
Working with the local health department and operating under a retail exemption may be required at the event, depending on the types of food products being made and served. Due to the variety in the types of meat products being purchased and prepared for these events, we recommend you contact your local health department, as well as MDA’s MPIP, prior to your event to ensure you comply with all applicable regulations.
These requirements protect consumers and event organizers to ensure everyone is consuming safe and wholesome products.
If you have any questions or would like any more information regarding meat and poultry products in the State of Missouri, please do not hesitate to call our office at (573) 522-1242.
Sincerely,
Marin DeBauch, DVM, MPH
Missouri Department of Agriculture
Meat and Poultry Inspection, Program Director
