How to Set Up Authy on a Mobile Device
Starting March 19, 2024, Authy will discontinue the desktop version of its application. If you downloaded Authy to your computer for two-factor authentication, please follow the steps below to install Authy to your smartphone and maintain your access:
1. Install the Authy app to your smartphone using your phone’s app store. The application should look something like this (please make sure that the logo has a red background, resembling the one below):
2. Once the app is downloaded, open the app and input the phone number that you used to set up Authy on your computer (this was likely your personal cell phone number). Choose “United States” or “+1” for the “Country Code” and tap “Submit”:
3. If it asks you to verify your account, choose the option that’s best for you (“Receive SMS message” is likely the easiest option — it will simply send a text to your phone).
If you choose “Receive SMS message,” enter the 6-digit code that was just sent to you in a text.
4. Then, if it asks you to give permission to send notifications, choose “Allow.” This allows the app to send you a notification if you’re trying to log in. If you choose “Don’t Allow,” the app should still work just fine.
5. If it asks you about enabling “Backup & Sync,” you can choose “Skip.”
6. Your account should appear automatically. If so, you can tap the account and get the code that you’ll enter into the “Wordfence 2FA box” the next time you need to log in. You’re all ready to go!
7. If your account does not appear automatically, please follow these steps:
- On your computer (rather than your phone), log in to your website and select “Howdy, [your username]” from the top of the screen.
- Scroll down until you see the “Wordfence Login Security” settings. Click “Manage 2FA.”
- Click “Deactivate,” then click “Deactivate” again when the extra warning appears.
- Your screen should show a large QR code.
- Keep your computer on that screen and open up the Authy app on your phone. Tap “Add Account.”
- Select “Scan QR Code.”
- If asked, allow the app to access your camera. Then, hold the phone over your computer screen as if you were going to take a photo of the QR code. Make sure you are using the Authy app to do this, rather than your phone’s camera app.
- Once the QR code is scanned, it should show a screen similar to this. Simply choose “Save.”
- The 6-digit code should be appearing on your phone.
- Now, open your computer again and return to the screen with the QR code. Navigate to the small box on the right side of the screen.
- In this box, enter the 6-digit code that is currently on your phone. Then, click “Activate.”
- This code naturally changes every 30 seconds, so just enter the code that is currently appearing, rather than any code you’ve seen in the past. It may help to wait until the code expires, and then use the newest one.
- If you see the following message, you’re all set (and you can click “Skip”)! If you do not see this message, or receive a message such as “Error Authenticating,” please email awilliams@diojeffcity.org and we can troubleshoot the issue.
