Are there really 12 days of Christmas? Was Jesus actually born in a stable? Why do we place presents under the tree?

In the latest podcast from the Diocese of Jefferson City, students at Mary Immaculate Parish School and Helias Catholic High School share their questions about Christmas.

Msgr. Robert Kurwicki, Vicar General, tells about the history behind our traditions — and how they connect with our Catholic faith. Click here to listen now.

Christmas Special Collection

The Diocese of Jefferson City is conducting a Christmas special collection for the benefit of the education of our seminarians and our infirm priests. The envelope for this collection is inserted in the Dec. 16 edition of the Catholic Missourian.

Parishioners will be instructed to place their gifts in the envelope, then put the envelopes in a collection basket during Mass — or give it to the parish office.

Bishop McKnight discusses the importance of this collection in his new Making Connections column. He writes: “I ask that you please keep our priests always in your prayers and remember them during this holy season of giving.”

Memorial Mass for Mary Elizabeth Schaffer, the mother of Bishop McKnight

Please remember Mary Elizabeth (O’Reilly) Schaffer, Bishop W. Shawn McKnight’s late mother, in your prayers. She died unexpectedly yet peacefully in the home on December 8, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, at the age of 73. A Memorial Mass for Mrs. Schaffer will be held at St. Andrew Church in Holt Summit on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 10:30 am.

Email scams targeting diocese

In recent days there have been a number of reports of email scams targeting our diocese. Often, the scammer will send an email that appears to be from a member of our clergy. The messages can request an urgent response or a fund transfer. Be wary of these messages and make sure to check the email address of the sender. Help protect our diocese from these scams by clicking here to report suspicious emails to our Information Technology support service.
