Warning: Free piano scam
There is an online scam targeting parishes in our diocese. The scam offers a free piano in exchange for paying moving expenses. In a recent example targeting one of our parishes, someone named “Sarah Smith” sent this email:
Apologies for intruding on your privacy. In possession is a Yamaha Baby Grand Piano that used to be owned by my late husband and I want to give it out to a loving home, music school or church. Please let me know if you will take it or if you have someone who you can refer to me, just in case you don’t need it.
The scammer also later sent photos of the “free piano.” We have blocked the email account that sent these messages. However, please be wary of any similar messages.
Help us protect our diocese by letting us know when you are contacted by online scammers: diojeffcity.org/information-technology/
