Civilize it!
Our political discourse has become increasingly rancorous and bitter. The U.S. bishops began a campaign leading into the 2020 election to restore civility to our public and political discourse called Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate. The Missouri Catholic Conference highlighted the campaign last year with a special episode of MCC from the Capitol with Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski. This year, the U.S. bishops are again challenging the faithful to answer Pope Francis’ call to seek “a better kind of politics, one truly at the service of the common good.” Civilize It: A Better Kind of Politics encourages individuals and families to commit to seeking the truth, building bridges, and finding solutions together that promote the common good. Individuals can sign the pledge, and sign up to receive additional materials, by visiting the USCCB Civilize It webpage.
Father Cesáreo Gabaráin, composer, under investigation
The Diocese of Jefferson City has been informed of sexual abuse allegations against Father Cesáreo Gabaráin, the prolific Spanish composer known for his song “Pescador de Hombres” who died in 1991. The alleged abuse took place in the 1970s and the Archdiocese of Madrid is conducting an investigation.
Until the investigation is completed, we recommend parishes and other Catholic organizations in the diocese refrain from using his songs. His work is licensed in the United States by Oregon Catholic Press (OCP). They have stated they will be donating their publisher share of royalties from his songs to a victims support organization.
Let us all pray for the healing of all victims of abuse, for healing and unity in our Church and for the soul and family of Father Gabaráin.
New Marriage preparation facilitator training Sept. 18 and Nov. 13
Priests, deacons, Parish Life Coordinators (PLCs) and lay marriage preparation facilitators who have not been trained for the new diocesan marriage preparation process can attend a one day training on Sept. 18 or Nov. 13. Trainings are available in English and Spanish. Although the Zoom option for these trainings will be available, we kindly ask participants to attend in person. Snacks and lunch will be provided.
Priests and PLCs who have not been able to attend a training can register for one of the trainings for lay facilitators or for a recorded video training for priests and PLCs only. The latter option is a brief version (three hours). If you select the latter option, you will receive a link with a recorded video training and the instructions you need to become a certified Prepare/Enrich (P/E) facilitator. You need to be certified by P/E in order to be able to use the P/E assessment in your parish.
All the resources to implement our marriage preparation policy are now available on the marriage preparation webpage. The material is available through password-protected links at diojeffcity.org/marriage-preparation. If you are involved in marriage preparation and have not received an email with instructions on how to access the material, please email Jamie at faithformation@diojeffcity.org.
For more information, please contact Jamie at faithformation@diojeffcity.org. Our Engaged Encounter weekends and Pre-Cana conferences are postponed until 2022. Please refer to the Marriage Preparation Programs & Resources document for other options to fulfill the requirement for Component II.
