Sept. 3, 2018 Weekly Memo

Every Monday the Chancery staff of the Diocese of Jefferson City offer an update on events and activities of interest to the parishes of the Diocese.

Bishop McKnight’s messages

Prayers for the universal church

I will be in Rome for the next two weeks, attending orientation for new bishops. Please know I am bringing my – and your — prayers for healing and renewal, both for our own diocese and for the universal church, with me. Please remember me in your prayers during this time as well, especially that I may discern how I may contribute, as a “rookie bishop,” to the healing and renewal we so sorely need. Remaining in communion with one another in our Catholic, Christian faith requires us to be truthful, honest and people of integrity. We are better together.

It is important to acknowledge many church personnel feel the impact of the news stories. We sometimes are approached by others, seeking information or perhaps wanting to divulge information about abusive behavior. While acknowledging people’s pain, we can not succumb to gossip. For those who want information, or want you to convey a message to Bishop McKnight, please encourage them to use the ‘reach us’ form on our diocesan website, diojeffcity.org. Assure them every submission is read. For those who need to report abuse, encourage them to contact our Victims Assistance Coordinator, Nancy Hoey, and to make use of the appropriate State of Missouri hotline or the Attorney General’s clergy abuse online form. All of this information is also on our website, under the ‘report abuse’ tab.

We have also created graphics you can use in your parish bulletins or on your website with the information on how to report abuse. They are linked below:

Thank you to all. Your support through this difficult time is greatly appreciated. Let us continue to pray for one another.

Prayer Intention for September

“For all those serving as first responders; may God protect them as they face danger with courage and provide healing assistance to those in need.”

“Por todas las personas que sirven como primeros socorristas; que Dios los proteja mientras se enfrentan al peligro con valentía y brindan ayuda sanadora a quienes más lo necesitan.”

A pdf of the prayer intention can be downloaded to be placed in your parish bulletin.

Email scam alert

Recently individuals have been contacted by email by someone pretending to be a priest from our Diocese, asking for gift cards, such as iTune cards. This is a variation on a scam which occurs quite frequently throughout the United States. Be very cautious in providing any unknown or suspicious contact with personal information, including your contact information or financial information. Verify any request for money through a separate contact, such as the individual’s known email address, calling the individual, or contacting the Chancery, Catholic Charities or your local parish or school.
