Every Monday the Chancery staff of the Diocese of Jefferson City offer an update on events and activities of interest to the parishes of the Diocese.
Bishop McKnight’s messages
October attendance count
The Diocese has involved itself in a common pastoral practice across the United States known as the ‘October Count.’ October is selected because studies indicate it represents one of the best months to count individuals who attend each weekend Mass (English or Spanish). This is a practical tool for pastoral planning for our parishes and I would be grateful for your participation again this year.
Attached is a tally sheet for the annual October Weekend Mass Count. Please make a copy of the tally sheet and complete one for each church served. My letter, also attached, provides more details, including how to return the completed form. Thank you again for your assistance in making this as comprehensive a count as possible.
Breaking the silence of abuse
I’ve completed the first week of the orientation for new bishops here in Rome. It brings me great comfort knowing you are praying with me, both for our own diocese and for the universal church. Please remember me in your prayers during this time as well, especially that I may discern how I may contribute, as a “rookie bishop,” to the healing and renewal we so sorely need. Remaining in communion with one another in our Catholic, Christian faith requires us to be truthful, honest and people of integrity. We are better together.
As a Diocese, we are committed to breaking the silence of abuse. When someone is reporting abuse, we must acknowledge their pain and how difficult it is to talk about it. False allegations are very rare. Our initial response to someone who is disclosing abuse for the first time must be compassionate. For those who need to report abuse, encourage them to contact our Victims Assistance Coordinator, Nancy Hoey, and to make use of the appropriate State of Missouri hotline or the Attorney General’s clergy abuse online form. All of this information is also on our website, under the ‘report abuse’ tab.
For those who want information, or want you to convey a message to Bishop McKnight, please encourage them to use the ‘reach us’ form on our diocesan website, diojeffcity.org. Assure them every submission is read.
We have also created graphics you can use in your parish bulletins or on your website with the information on how to report abuse. They are linked below:
Thank you to all. Each of us has a role in healing the pain of abuse. Let us continue to pray for one another.

This organization is meeting an important need in our diocese, having provided services to more than 400 women in mid-Missouri. If your parish does not currently work with them, please consider taking a call from one of their staff members to discuss possibilities for educating your parishioners about the life-affirming work they are doing.
