Dec. 3, 2018 Weekly memo

Every Monday the Chancery staff of the Diocese of Jefferson City offer an update on events and activities of interest to the parishes of the Diocese.

New this week:

Bishop McKnight’s messages

Bishops’ pastoral against racism

Citing “the persistence of the evil of racism,” the U.S. bishops issued a pastoral letter against racism, Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, at their plenary assembly last month. In addition, educational materials for elementary through adult and parish resources have been provided. Some are intended for Advent, and most resources are also available in Spanish. The letter is particularly timely since the FBI recently reported reports of hate crimes have increased dramatically.

Liturgy Preparation Aid for the Seasons of Advent and Christmas, Year C

The attached file includes:

  • Presider text for a Rite of Reconciliation of Several Penitents with Individual Confession and Absolution
  • Readings
  • Alternate  Readings
  • Sample Penances
  • Music Suggestions
  • A list of Lectionary citations for Sundays and Solemnities
  • A Liturgical Calendar Advisory for Advent and Christmas
  • The Christmas Proclamation
  • The Announcement of the Dates of Easter and the Movable Feasts (to be proclaimed on Epiphany)

Once again, we are grateful to the International Commission on English in the Liturgy and to the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine who have given their kind permission to use their copyrighted liturgical texts.

Prayer Intention for December

Please add this intention to your parish bulletins and newsletters as well as to your parish Eucharistic Adoration Chapels. A graphic suitable for insert in bulletins is below. It also can be a part of your private prayer.

“For the blessing of family life; that as a community we may safeguard this basic cell of society in public policy, and as a Church we may support those struggling to provide a home filled with faith, hope and love.”

“Por la bendición de la vida familiar; que como comunidad podamos salvaguardar esta célula básica de la sociedad en la política pública, y como Iglesia podamos apoyar a aquellos que luchan por brindar un hogar lleno de fe, esperanza y amor.”

Breaking the Silence of Abuse

As a Diocese, we are committed to breaking the silence of abuse. When someone is reporting abuse, we must acknowledge their pain and how difficult it is to talk about it. False allegations are very rare. Our initial response to someone who is disclosing abuse for the first time must be compassionate. For those who need to report abuse, encourage them to contact our Victims Assistance Coordinator, Nancy Hoey, and to make use of the appropriate State of Missouri hotline or the Attorney General’s clergy abuse online form. All of this information is also on our website, under the ‘report abuse’ tab.

For those who want information, or want you to convey a message to Bishop McKnight, please encourage them to use the ‘reach us’ form on our diocesan website, Assure them every submission is read.

We have also created graphics you can use in your parish bulletins or on your website with the information on how to report abuse. They are linked below:

Thank you to all. Each of us has a role in healing the pain of abuse. Let us continue to pray for one another.

House Parents/Relief Parents Needed

SNA is seeking a Catholic, married couple to be full time, live-in house parents, as well as a Catholic, married couple to be part-time relief parents. The main responsibility of house parents is to provide a stable, loving and supportive home environment. Each spouse receives a salary and a compensation package that includes a rent-free apartment, meals, and utilities. House parents are eligible for all of St. Nicholas benefit programs. The role of relief parents is the care of the students when full-time house parents are away. Relief parents reside in the student home when they are on duty.
