Aug. 27, 2018 Weekly Memo

Every Monday the Chancery staff of the Diocese of Jefferson City offer an update on events and activities of interest to the parishes of the Diocese.

Bishop McKnight’s messages

Healing through transparency and accountability

As recipients of this weekly memo know, Bishop McKnight issued an important “Making Connections” on Friday. This is a very important time in the Church and in our local church community. Bishop McKnight asks all priests to attend a meeting on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Chancery. The meeting will begin with Daytime Prayer. Priests are asked to contact Bishop McKnight if they cannot attend.

Secondly, it is important to acknowledge many church personnel feel the impact of the news stories. We sometimes are approached by others, seeking information or perhaps wanting to divulge information about abusive behavior. While acknowledging people’s pain, we can not succumb to gossip. For those who want information, or want you to convey a message to Bishop McKnight, please encourage them to use the ‘reach us’ form on our diocesan website, diojeffcity.org. Assure them every submission is read. For those who need to report abuse, encourage them to contact our Victims Assistance Coordinator, Nancy Hoey, and to make use of the appropriate State of Missouri hotline or the Attorney General’s clergy abuse online form. All of this information is also on our website, under the ‘report abuse’ tab.

We have also created graphics you can use in your parish bulletins or on your website with the information on how to report abuse. They are linked below:

Thank you to all. Your support through this difficult time is greatly appreciated. Let us continue to pray for one another. We are Better Together.

Prayer Intention for September

“For all those serving as first responders; may God protect them as they face danger with courage and provide healing assistance to those in need.”

“Por todas las personas que sirven como primeros socorristas; que Dios los proteja mientras se enfrentan al peligro con valentía y brindan ayuda sanadora a quienes más lo necesitan.”

A pdf of the prayer intention can be downloaded to be placed in your parish bulletin.

St. Raymond’s Society/Respect Life Month

As parishes makes plans for Respect Life Month in October, they may wish to consider supporting and working with the St. Raymond’s Society. Members of the society operate transitional homes in Columbia, Jefferson City, and Rolla, with the mission of helping at-risk mothers become self-sufficient heads of household.  This organization is meeting an important need in our diocese, having provided services to more than 400 women in mid-Missouri.  If your parish does not currently work with them, please consider taking a call from one of their staff members to discuss possibilities for educating your parishioners about the life-affirming work they are doing.  You may also reach out to them directly at 573-893-2067 or visit their website, srshelp.org.
