Certification Policy for Parish Religious Education Directors/Coordinators and Youth Ministers in Diocese of Jefferson City
Parish religious education directors/coordinators and youth ministers assist pastors in carrying out the Church's catechetical mission in the parish. Accomplishing this mission is vital for the future of the Church and carries with it tremendous responsibilities. In order to insure that parish directors/coordinators of religious education and youth ministers are adequately prepared to successfully carry out the responsibilities inherent in their positions, the following policy is initiated.
Orientation: A clear job description shall be provided to the parish religious education director/coordinator or youth minister that will outline their duties and responsibilities. A copy of the job description shall be sent to the appropriate diocesan office. Parish directors/coordinators of religious education and youth ministers will meet with a diocesan Religious Education or Youth Office staff person as they begin their ministry. The purpose of this meeting is to introduce them to diocesan policies and resources and clarify their responsibilities.
Training: Parish religious education directors/coordinators and youth ministers will attend a diocesan sponsored or approved leadership training course or mentoring program within the first three years of their ministry. Religious education directors/coordinators will also complete the catechist certification requirements of the diocese.
