Activities of the Diocesan Diaconate Program of ordained deacons and men in formation towards ordination are guided by the decisions of the Bishop and by the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States and Deacon Handbook.
All active ordained are required to maintain a Covenant of Service with the Bishop. In addition to signature of approval of this covenant by the Bishop, the Pastor of the parish of assignment, the Parish Council President and the deacon's spouse, if married, must sign the Covenant.
All active ordained are required to complete an annual Diaconal Ongoing Formation Profile. This profile accounts for attendance of a required annual retreat, other retreat or spiritual renewal opportunities, seminars, workshops, self-studies or materials studied twoards continuing education and spiritual renewal. The diocesan requirement for ongoing formation is a minimum of 25 hours per year plus an annual three-day retreat. The Diaconate Office arranges an annual retreat, annual deacon wekkend and various pastoral days throughout the year.
